“PURPOSE: To report the intermediate multicenter results of a technique of sutureless intrascleral fixation of a standard 3-piece posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC IOL) in the Liproxstatin-1 cell line ciliary sulcus.

SETTING: Four European ophthalmology centers.

METHODS: A technique for sutureless intrascleral fixation of the haptics of a standard 3-piece PC IOL was retrospectively evaluated. The technique uses standardized maneuvers to fixate the PC IOL without need for special haptic architecture or preparation or haptic suturing. All patients having IOL implantation by the technique were evaluated for preoperative status (visual acuity, refractive error, preexisting ocular conditions, optical biometry), postoperative status, complications, and need for further surgery.

RESULTS: The study evaluated 63 consecutive patients from 4 institutions (4 surgeons). The median follow-up was 7 months. Two dislocated PC IOLs (3.6%) were decentered; the other 61 IOLs (96.8%) were stable and well centered. There were no cases of recurrent dislocation, endophthalmitis, retinal detachment, or glaucoma.

CONCLUSION: Fixation of PC IOL haptics in a limbus-parallel scleral tunnel provided exact centration and axial stability of the IOL and prevented distortion and subluxation in most cases.

“Introduction: Cytotoxic therapy for patients with cancer frequently induces reversible, but long-lasting alopecia which might be prevented by scalp cooling. This study evaluates the effectiveness of scalp cooling with respect to the severity of chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA) and the

purchase and use of wigs and head covers.

Materials and methods: In this observational study, scalp-cooled patients (n = 160) were compared with non scalp-cooled patients (n = 86) with several types of cancer. Patients were enrolled in 15, mostly general hospitals prior to taxane and/or anthracycline-based chemotherapy. Patients completed four questionnaires between the start and one year after the last chemotherapy.

Results: Severity of CIA, and purchasing and actually HDAC inhibitor wearing wigs and head covers were significantly lower among scalp-cooled than non scalp-cooled patients. Overall, scalp cooling reduced the use of wigs and head covers by 40%. Among 84 scalp-cooled

“Background and objective: Pulmonary sarcoidosis (PS) is characterized by the formation of granulomas in the lungs and has been associated with infection by microorganisms. Triggering receptor expressed on the surface of myeloid cells (TREM)-1 is overexpressed in response to infection while TREM-2 is involved in granuloma formation. We hypothesized that these receptors Y-27632 are overexpressed in PS and might be useful for diagnostic testing.

Methods: Cell surface TREM-1 and TREM-2 expression in cells obtained at bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) was measured in individuals

with sarcoidosis (n = 26) and compared with that seen in individuals with other interstitial lung diseases (ILD) (n = 27).

Results: TREM-1 and TREM-2 expression was significantly increased in sarcoidosis compared with other ILD: total number of TREM-1, P = 0.0039 (23.81 vs 13.50 cells/mu l), TREM-2, P < 0.0001 (32.81 vs 7.76 cells/mu l); percentage of TREM-1: P = 0.0002 (41.30% vs 15.70%), TREM-2: P < 0.0001 (34% vs 9.60%); and mean fluorescence of TREM-1: P = 0.0005 (5.43 vs 1.96), TREM-2: P = 0.0011 (6.85 vs 2.77). Increase in both of these receptors seems to be typical for PS. In discriminating sarcoidosis from other ILD, the specificity (96%) and sensitivity (72%) of the combination of TREM-1 and TREM-2 was high.

Conclusions: Increased TREM-1 and TREM-2 cell surface expression is observed in sarcoidosis.

This study addresses the concept of early prediction of IUGR using echographic measurements in the first trimester. We studied one traditional and one new marker, the crown-rump length (CRL) and the cerebro-corporal coefficient (CCC). We retrospectively

reviewed the charts of 139 pregnancies that gave birth to babies with IUGR and 25 charts of normal pregnancies that made the control group. Screening in the first trimester of pregnancy was done in 125 (89.9%) pregnant women between 10 and 14 weeks. We calculated the diagnostic and predictive values of these two parameters in IUGR.

The sensitivity and specificity for reduced CRL were 29 and 100%, respectively, and for the CCC > 0.6, 46 and 100%, respectively. Using IUGR prevalence (10%) and the Bayes equation we calculated the positive predictive value of reduced CRL and > 0.6 CCC in general, moderate and severe IUGR and severe IUGR alone. They were 1, 1, 9%, 13, 19 and 29%, respectively.

The positive predictive value of the crown-rump length and the cerebro-corporal coefficient for IUGR in the general population increases with the severity of the disease.

Using these two parameters, however, would be more useful in high-risk pregnancies.”

Blue emission at similar to 440 nm was observed for hexagonal plates, and analyses of time-resolved photoluminescence spectra showed that two transitions were responsible for this blue emission, because transitions from Zn(i) to the valence band (430 nm) and from Zn(i) to V(Zn) (480 nm) were distinguished by emission wavelengths and lifetimes.
